A Resource For Those Experiencing Unemployment

The Habit of Gratitude: Valuing Personal and Social Resources

gratitudeSpeaking from experience, it can be hard to face the world with gratitude when life seems to be punching us left and right with negatives.  The bills are stacking up, that wheel in our head is spinning with thoughts of things we should be doing but cannot due to the circumstance of unemployment and worry seems to be the most frequent knock at the door.  Gratitude in the midst of all this is difficult …yet in developing the habit of gratitude one will plant the seed for goodness that is lasting.

Gratitude, in my opinion, is directly connected to networking.  We all have heard that when searching for employment we should network.  Gratitude simply put builds friendship and social bonds that are lasting.  Showing love and appreciation are the natural steps we take in building our people skills.  When faced with the decision to practice gratitude we are challenged to think in creative ways. We are challenged to make gifts of ourselves.  Having gone one year searching for employment, I was humbled and challenged to practice gratitude. I am not saying it was easy but having just finished my first day of work today, I have come to the realization that it was worth it.  Why? Reflecting on the first day of work and the skills required, the most used skill of my first day on the job was that of my people skills.  Faced with particular circumstances, I was challenged today to think in new and creative ways of how I can be a gift to others.  The habit of gratitude made this easier…not perfect…but easier.  Developing the habit of gratitude in particular situations of life will foster the ability to make gifts of ourselves in universal ways.  There is much truth and wisdom, that can be applied to the job search in the old saying ¨Have an attitude of gratitude¨.

7 Answers To The Question?

what

The following advice about Twitter is a personal application of insights gained from one of my favorite authors, Jean Vanier.  Jean does not write about technology, social media, Twitter or anything like that. He writes and speaks about becoming human.   I have gained a great deal of insight and wisdom from him and  I have often asked myself the following question: Can the  wisdom and insight of Jean Vanier be applied to the Twitter Phenomenon? My answer is YES!

How do you use Twitter? There are many people out there offering advice on the most effective way to use Twitter.  Logic tells us that key in answering this question is an understanding of Purpose. What is the purpose of Twitter? Well, one might say the purpose of Twitter is to let everyone know What You Are Doing Now? Of course, I cannot argue with this response.  It is true… that is what we Do on Twitter.  Applying the philosophical principle that Before we can do, we must BE… I now consider the essence…the being of Twitter.  The essence of Twitter from my perspective is a reflection of (Never a REPLACEMENT FOR) humanity and life itself.  I liken it to being in a crowd. Close your eyes and imagine a crowd of people.  You notice the many voices.  The wonderful thing about hearing these voices is that we can choose which voice we will listen too.  Hearing and Listening are, of course, two different things.  Listening involves us following that voice.  It is what we do on Twitter and ideally a reflection of the reality of human life.  In Response to the question How Do You Use Twitter? I suggest that there are 7 key answers that will give us a Balanced and Effective approach to Twitter Usage.

Answer One : To Reveal

I use Twitter To Reveal! On day one, when we signed up for Twitter, all us of found ourselves ALONE! I know when I signed up …I was confused and said What´s the Big Deal about this? I am all ALONE! This sucks!

I had not understood that I had to reveal myself… to say… Hey I am here! It´s me Darrell! Hello Twitter… something like that! In doing so, we are acknowledging that we, like everyone on Twitter, ARE UNIQUE! There is no other person on Twitter like YOU!  It is rather beautiful.

To reveal ourselves and other people (yes I think it is a two way road) involves TIME & ATTENTION.   IT is an Evolution that, when watered with Time and Attention, can produce rather interesting and wonderful relationships. Today is #followfriday.  I know some people don´t like it but looking at it in a positive way…it is a great way to reveal someone.  To stand up before the Twitter Community and say HEY! So and SO is UNIQUE! I think it is healthy and human to recognize the uniqueness of others.

Before I move on, I would like to raise a question… Has anyone asked themselves why Ashton did not follow the One Million plus people who followed him?  Each and every person on that list is unique and the question is one that I am pondering.

Answer Two: To Understand

I use Twitter To Understand. Part of being human involves the need to understand.  If no one understands us, Jean Vanier says, then it is not possible for us to find our inner peace.  Understanding others is a way of bringing peace into their lives and into the Twitter Community.  One way we can understand people is to take time to read and respond to Tweets.  Dare to go to the extreme of actually visiting the person´s site.  In doing so, we are making an attempt to understand what makes the particular person unique.  We also, in doing so, open the door for the next answer.

Answer Three: To Communicate

I use Twitter To Communicate. Communication, ideally, is mutual.  It is a process that involves teacher and student.  We move back and forth between these roles.  When communicating on Twitter, we take time to learn about another person, cause or organization.  Most likely we give and recognize their name!  Names are so important on Twitter.  On Twitter, we know there is a lot of talk about Names. The word Name can also be called Brand.  Making a Name for ourselves on Twitter is a goal that we may have.  When people recognize and call us by Name they are doing something rather profound. According to Jean Vanier, to Name something is to call it out of chaos.  During these difficult economic times, chaos abounds.  I think this is one of the many factors involved in Twitter´s success.  Twitter enables people to be called by Name.  It reflects a need that prevalent in a chaotic world.  In the midst of screaming voices, we can feel lost.  By the means of Twitter, through and ordered and structure way, our name can be called.  We can give Name to OUR Voice. I know it sounds backwards but I think it is true.  In doing so, we reveal that we understand who we are!

Answer Four: To Celebrate

I use Twitter To Celebrate! Fun and Happiness are part of LIFE!  To leave fun, joy and celebration out of Twitter is deny a very important part of being human.  Every person needs to be celebrated. To be a Source of Joy! When Twittering, we can ask ourselves how do we celebrate others? In celebrating others (and I do not just mean those with tremendous followings) I mean everyone… in doing so we fulfilling a human need.  This is a wonderful thing because it is a lived experience that people can bring into their encounters outside of Twitter.  An Eb and Flow sort of approach.  It is life giving!  Celebrating others also leads to the next answer!

Answer Five: To Empower!

I use Twitter To EMPOWER! When we celebrate another person, we acknowledge MEANING! Jean Vanier says that empowering someone is helping people discover meaning in the lives.  We can use Twitter to help people discover meaning in their life.  Isn´t that incredible?  You may be asking…So how will I know if someone recognizes meaning in their life?  I would like to suggest that those who use Twitter with an understanding and respect for others have been empowered.  Vanier says that when we empower others what follows is a sense of responsibility.  With responsibility comes respect.  Using Twitter shouldn´t be mindless.  If we were robots and couldn´t think for ourselves then perhaps it would be different.  Those who use Twitter with Respect and Responsibility are the ones who have been EMPOWERED! Who on your Twitter page do you consider honestly Empowered?  It is a question to ponder.

Answer Six: To Connect

I use Twitter To Connect. Jean Vanier says that a connection is a call to enter into another.  Using Twitter to make connections is a wonderful experience of Variety.  As I have stated, no one person is alike on Twitter.  Each one is unique.  To have the ability to make connections with unique people is a great gift.  In doing so, our walls can come down and we can share honestly the truths of our unique experiences and, at the same time, be open to the truths of another person´s unique experience.  The two way street makes for a Great CONNECTION!

Answer Seven: To Forgive

I use Twitter To Forgive.  Yes I said FORGIVE!  I will explain… When using Twitter, we should so with the understanding that life is not perfect.  Sometimes people will have a bad day…as Vanier says…sometimes we will be governed by pain…  Understanding this reality about life, when using Twitter, will allow room for people to be themselves.  This is key!  When we let people be themselves we say to them.. I am not here to be Oppressive…nor  to be Destructive…  I recognize The PERSONAL FREEDOM and GROWTH of each person on Twitter. When we boil these statements down… what we really are aiming at… is building relationships based on TRUST!  Without Trust…there is oppression, destruction, no freedom nor growth. We speak a lot about Authority on Twitter.  It is a great reminder that the foundation of AUTHORITY is not numbers but TRUST.

Finally, I return to thed question…How Do You Use Twitter? It is a personal question that all of us can ponder and come to own conclusions on.  These hve been mine and I am certainly open and curious about yours! I thank you for being open to the uniqueness of ME:)

Because maybe that career as a “Daytime TV Expert” isn’t as profitable as you thought…

NickEveryone has been there.

You look at your resume and your cover letter one last time, cross your fingers, and hit “Send”.

Maybe it was a job that you didn’t really care for.  Maybe it was a job that you really needed.  Maybe it was your dream job.  But two weeks later, nothing.  No call, no e-mail, no hope.  And your experience section for “couch potato” keeps on growing.

I know how it is.  Because I used to be that guy.

Maybe you got laid off, maybe you got fired, or maybe you had a shiny new job locked in, only to find out your employer was a complete tool.  The fact that you’re here either means that you saw unemployment in your future or that you are there right now.  Or you’re a millennial (born between 1980 and 2000) like me and wanting to get off to the right start.  Or maybe you’re managing people like me and want to know the right way to do it.

Good for you - sit up, brush off those potato chip crumbs and read up.

I don’t claim to be an expert, but I am good at what I do (according to everyone I’ve been able to help) - and I want to help you.  I don’t make any promises, but I know what has worked for me and I am happy to share it with you.  I hope you use the information I provide to make better, stronger, more informed decisions. I hope you use it to treat people with the respect they deserve and get yourself a better, more fulfilling job.  But ultimately, it’s up to you what you do with this info.

Luckily, I was laid-off…

TrappedI graduated from college with a bachelor of science degree in Business Administration, Marketing and Computer Information Systems.  I also had a minor in Media Studies.

What exactly do you tell an employer when they ask you “What sort of career were you going for?” with a degree like that?  Really, my degree was a symbiosis of my programmer father’s plans for my life, who I was obligated to please because he was footing the bill, and my own plans for my life after realizing that I loved working at the college radio station as the production (on-air marketing) director.

As you can imagine, I had a really hard time explaining to employers exactly what it was that I learned while I was in college.  You can’t exactly mention drunken debauchery or a familial career clash during a job interview, so I had to come up with something.

I did, and I managed to land a plushy job at a major technology company, programming for a ridiculously high salary for a new kid out of college.  I was miserable there, and luckily, I was laid-off along with many others - many of whom had many more gray hairs than I did.

It really is true that you become your own worst enemy…

My Own Worst EnemyIt took me a while to find another job - as it usually does when you are demoralized.

Honestly, who could look at someone as awesome as me and think, “lets lay this guy off.”  What’s worse, I was a good programmer and a quick learner - with no mentors available to me because they were all way too busy.  How could I get punished for something that was outside of my control?  Obviously, I had to have done something wrong.

In this case, it really is true that you become your own worst enemy.  I wasn’t thinking about what I wanted or what would be good for me.

As my new job search kicked off, that was the mentality I had.  When I found a position I liked, I only saw a very lucrative salary, a way to end my unemployment, and a way to redeem my self worth and hey, if it was going to be more of the same old crap from the last company, so what, right?  This time, I’d prove myself to be a great learner, a great programmer, and code my way to glory.

Needless to say, I ended up bouncing from THAT job after only a few months, disgraced and disgruntled.  This time I was fired.  Never mind that the business was operating under some pretty unethical principles; never mind that my supervising lead programmer was completely unwilling to teach a newbie the ropes; it was obviously my lack of devotion and my increasing distaste for the workplace that had led me to get fired.

I’d made the realization that I was targeting jobs which were not fulfilling for me.  I was seeking out companies that were perfectly okay disrespecting me, treating me like a number, and communicating poorly.  Looking for a job this time, I was prepared.  I knew exactly what I wanted, what I was looking for, and the kind of company that I would like to work for.  And now I’m much better off.

I have work that I enjoy and I feel respected and well-liked.  I’m able to put my creativity to use and my ideas are respected and valued.  There’s no wall between me and the management - and my ideas can flow freely with no interference.  On the same level, I can get help and tutelage just as easily.

Unless you know where you’re going, you will never get there…

I’m telling you all this because I want to share what I learned along the way.  I want to share the things I’m still learning.

Maybe you can make some sense of it for yourself and use it to pull yourself up off the couch and into that suit.  Maybe it’ll just give you a few laughs.  Maybe you’ll learn how to manage your Millennials better.  Or maybe you’ll find a path to your dream job - to create career goals for yourself, to understand the common job-searching mistakes and avoid them yourself, to read advice from well-known sources, and give yourself hope for your future.

A well-tuned resume, cover letter and interview technique will help you find your own path.  Thinking critically about business and ethics and your role in organizations can only help you find the right kinds of businesses.  Thinking critically about your own preferences will help you accomplish more in your career.  After all, unless you know where you’re going, you’ll never get there.

Something New! Jobaphiles

Another new and different job site that has appeared recently is one called Jabaphiles.  It bids itself as a free job-auction website.  You can post a job and local college students and recent grads will then bid for it by indicating how much they are willing to work for and they should be hired.  Considering the economic times, it is an interesting concept. You can find more information about Jobaphiles here.  jobo

Twitter Job Search Launched

twitter1

In my efforts to discover how twitter is being used as part of the job search, I discovered the following news article about a Twitter Job Search Engine.  What do you think? I am curious to see how popular this will become or how well it will work?  The Article is below and the link is here.

New Twitter Phenomenon Debuts at SXSWi - TwitterJobSearch Goes Where Google Doesn’t and Makes Sense of Social Media with Semantic Search

AUSTIN, Texas and LONDON, March 17 /PRNewswire/ — Rounding off the buzz at this year’s SXSWi is the launch of http://www.TwitterJobSearch.com, the first “smart” search engine that extracts meaning from Twitter content to create a real-time, global online resource of all jobs posted onto the platform. Using relevancy algorithms developed by Workhound (http://www.Workhound.co.uk), the UK’s largest job search engine, the technology will build out into further social media channels and topics, providing semantic intelligence capabilities for social media platforms, business and consumers.

“TwitterJobSearch is an early example of how social media search needs to evolve and signals how solid business models can be built,” commented Howard Lee, CEO of Workhound. “The pronounced shift into social media and cloud computing is already changing the Internet landscape and evolving consumers’ expectations. Search and social network providers are in real danger of losing their relevance and traction unless they can get this right.”

According to GigaTweet, there have been over 1.3 billion tweets posted, yet this wealth of raw data has previously only been searchable via keywords, trends or popularity. “If the value of Twitter is going to extend beyond one’s social graph, better search tools are required,” added William Fischer, Director of Workhound. “By applying contextual search to billions of really quite random tweets, we’re helping social networks to evolve from communication tools to become powerful publishing platforms.”

TwitterJobSearch looks at the content of every tweet in context to determine its intent and break out filterable data. Getting beyond the 140-character limit, the technology also looks at biography information and crawls destination URLs to find additional information. The real-time relevancy engine and algorithms determine whether the post was a feed, retweet or original message, what language was used, whether the tweeter has previously posted job vacancies and how words used categorize the content. Additional context is added wherever possible to ensure the tweet appears in search results if it is missing vital data such as location. As an example, “Sales director London job” on search.twitter.com brings back 4 results, while the same search on http://www.TwitterJobSearch.com provides 6202 opportunities, while “Marketing manager New York job” provides 19 and 4122 respectively.

This initial launch means that anyone online can now access the wealth of job opportunities posted onto Twitter, regardless of whether they are a member. There were 26,090 unique English language vacancies posted onto Twitter over the last 7-day period, which equates to around 3% of live vacancies. TwitterJobSearch requires no registration and is free to use.

About TwitterJobSearch

TwitterJobSearch (http://www.TwitterJobSearch.com) is the new service from Workhound (http://www.Workhound.co.uk), the UK’s leading job search engine. As part of its aim to organize the world’s online recruitment data, Workhound identified Twitter as a growing recruitment channel and created a contextual search-based technology to analyze, organize and extend the reach of job opportunities posted onto the micro-blogging platform.

Unemployed workers get boost in budget (What Do You Think?)

budget

So what is in the budget for the unemployed? The below is from CBC. What do you think? Is it enough? Do you have suggestions?

Employment insurance and other programs to help Canadians who don’t have jobs would get a temporary boost over the next two years under Tuesday’s federal budget.

“They [the unemployed] will need greater support in this time of recession,” Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said in his budget speech.

The support would include:

  • Extending funding for workers searching for new jobs and for retraining.
  • Extra help for individuals who have lost their jobs as a result of employers going bankrupt.
  • Additional funding to help younger, older, aboriginal workers and immigrant workers find jobs.

EI serves 600,000 a year

Much of the new funding would be funnelled through the existing EI program, which serves about 600,000 Canadians a year, according to Department of Finance figures.

Under the budget, over the next two years, the government would temporarily allow people to claim EI benefits for an extra five weeks, up to a maximum total of 50 weeks a measure expected to cost the government $1.15 billion. EI users living in areas with higher unemployment rates would be eligible for more weeks of benefits.

Under the budget people would be allowed to claim EI benefits for an extra five weeks, a measure expected to cost the government $1.15 billion. CBC

Up to 10,000 people who have worked for a single company or in a single industry for a long time would be eligible to have their benefits extended for an even longer period than 50 weeks while they participate in longer-term training programs. That measure would cost about $500 million over the two years.

The budget also provides help for Canadians at risk of layoffs due to the precarious state of their employers.

The government would spend $200 million over two years to boost work-sharing agreements that would allow workers to receive EI benefits if they work fewer hours while their employers recover.

For workers losing their jobs due to companies going bankrupt, there’s the proposed expansion of the Wage Earner Protection Program — to cover severance pay owed to eligible employees, at a cost of an estimated $50 million over two years.

The program already covers wages and vacation pay worth up to four weeks of maximum insurable earnings under the Employment Insurance Act.

Some EI benefits could also be extended down the road to self-employed workers. The budget says the government would consult with the public to develop ways to provide EI paternity and maternity benefits to people with their own businesses.

Measures target Canadians in training

The 2009 budget includes some new money for workers training to enter or re-enter the workforce:

  • $1 billion over two years for training through EI.
  • $500 million over two years to help fund training for individuals who don’t qualify for EI training, such as self-employed people or Canadians who have not worked for a while.
  • $40 million a year to launch a $2,000 grant as an incentive to complete apprenticeship training. About 20,000 people a year who have completed their training would qualify for the taxable grant.
  • $87.5 million a year to boost the number of Canadian Graduate Scholarships, providing funding for 500 more doctoral and 1,000 more master’s students. Of that, $70 million would go to students in sciences and engineering. The remaining $17.5 million would be directed towards students working on business-related degrees.

Help for young, older, immigrant, aboriginal workers

Funding would also go to specific groups facing unusually high unemployment to help them land jobs:

  • Young workers: $55 million over two years to help them find summer jobs.
  • Older workers: An additional $60 million over three years for the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers and its expansion to include workers in more communities.
  • Immigrants: $50 million over two years to help develop a national framework in partnership with provinces and territories that would make it easier for their foreign credentials to be recognized.
  • Aboriginal workers: An additional $100 million over three years for training through the Aboriginal Skills and Employment Partnership, which would be expected to support the creation of 6,000 jobs; and $75 million toward a two-year Aboriginal Skills and Training Strategic Investment Fund for short-term, partnership-based programs

The Exploitation Of Illegal Workers In Toronto: COMPRA Y VENTA A Gathering Place for those looking to exploit human beings!

3466009_63b15971e3

The issue of illegal workers in Canada is one that brings about many reactions.  Putting various issues aside, I would like to address the issue of human exploitation and abuse that takes place here in Toronto.

All of us need to work.  Yes it is true that there are thousands of undocumented workers here in Toronto.  It is also true that these people need to survive.  Many come to Canada with hopes of making a better life for themselves.  When they arrive here they encounter a dark and evil world. They are exposed to so called employers advertising most often on a site called Compra Y Venta.  Compra YVenta is also a newspaper that in circulation around the city aimed at a Latin audience.  Compra Venta also lists employment opportunities where people can work illegally here in Canada.  Sounds good so far …right?

What the person searching for work via Compra Y Venta does not realize, is the dark businesses that search out their victims.  They advertise for free their offers of employment.  Like a vampire, lurking in the night, waiting to break flesh and taste the blood of the human spirit.  The jobs pay little.  The conditions are unsafe and in my opinion, inhumane.  A person can work themselves into the ground, so that the employer can profit.  The biggest atrocity that they can commit is the decision to say… I AM NOT PAYING YOU!  If you get hurt…. the response is…. I will call immigration.  As a Canadian, it angers me to find out that the very people exploiting others here in this wonderful country, are most often people who once walked in the shoes of the illegal workers.  They exploit their own people!  I don’t care about the social and economic implications of illegal workers when I am speaking at this level.  No one, absolutely no one deserves to be treated as if they are not human.  I question the ethics of the newspaper and website called Compra Y Venta?  It is common knowledge that there are very dark and vicious people advertising on the site.  Basically, they are people who commit crimes against the human being.  Why does this newspaper allow such lowlife’s the forum to exploit others?

The sad thing is that those who have been exploited but such employers live in silence.  They have no voice.  They carry with them the pain of being exploited by their own people!  Their sword used against them is called Fear!  Many of these illegal workers are wonderful, hard working and down to earth people.  It angers me to know that their experience of Canada is one filled with encounters with those seeking to make money off of them.  They act as if they are the king of the land and yet fail to realize that what they are doing too is illegal.  It is of course, a vicious circle but that does not mean that those Canadians with a voice should do nothing.  I challenge Compra Y Venta to establish tighter methods for the posting of jobs on their site.  Actually Compra Y Venta (yes I am speaking to you) I have an idea.  Start charging money for people to make postings on your site.  The exploiters are too cheap to pay the fees.  They want everything for nothing.  Perhaps you also could establish a ratings system such as that on ebay.  When an employer posts a job offer…allow job seekers to rate the employer.  Allow them the chance, to notify others that if they go near this employer, they will be hurt.  I challenge you to do this.  I discovered today, a silent blog that relates to Compra Y Venta.  It speaks about the employers advertising on with the site who never pay their employees.  ( Check it out here).  If you recognize the name…my advice is to stay clear of them.  Furthermore, for the legal workers out there…think twice about doing business with those on the shady side.

Finally, if you are reading this and are among those who crush the spirits of people looking for work here in Canada… I want to ask you one question?  ”HOW CAN YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT, KNOWING THAT YOU HAVE EXPLOITED ONE OF GOD’S CREATIONS?”  I will pray for you!
